According to Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, “The Growlers might be the most interesting band in the world. Certainly one of the coolest.” Perhaps he is a bit partial since he produced the Costa Mesa “beach goth” band’s latest album, City Club, but take a listen to songs like “I’ll Be Around,” “Night Ride,”Dope on a Rope,” and the title track, it’s easy to see that JC isn’t exaggerating. An effortless mix of rock, surf, country, psych, and pop defines the songs on the LP, with Brooks Nielson’s smoky vocals pairing perfectly with the guitar riff-driven backdrop provided by fellow members Matt Taylor and Kayle Straka.
