Debut LP by Michael Collins’ new Drugdealer project. The End Of Comedy (shots fired?) is as trippy as you would expect from the name of the band (Collins also uses the aliases Run DMT and Salvia Plath, LOL) and is chock full of enough baby boomer stoner cliches to fill a Volkswagen EuroVan, from the John Lennon-esque wandering vocals on “The Real World”, to the full-blown Carole King-inspired soulful romp of “Suddenly” and “The End Of Comedy”, two of the album’s best tracks, courtesy of Natalie Mering a.k.a. Weyes Blood. Kindred spirit and fellow west coast prankster Ariel Pink lends a subtle vocal to “Easy To Forget” and plays bass on “Suddenly”. After flexing uncanny tributes to Todd Rundgren, The Beatles, The Carpenters and Fleetwood Mac, the album takes a sharp left turn out of Penny Lane straight into hiss-soaked outsider funk territory (a la P.P.U.) on penultimate track “My Life”. Also featuring appearances by Jackson Mcintosh of Sheer Agony and Charles Free. Sleeve designed by the inimitable Robert Beatty.
