Bomaye! This collection commemorates a decade of investigation into the music of Zambia by Now-Again boss Egon and serves as a terrific primer on the small Zambian rock scene of the 1970s known as Zamrock. Freshly liberated from the tight grip of the British Empire and struggling to establish a stable national infrastructure and economy, all while carefully avoiding war being waged between neighboring countries, many young Zambian musicians looked straight past the funk-infused Afrobeat sound to the north and took inspiration from Black Sabbath, Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and other noisy British rock bands of the day. Welcome To Zamrock Vol. 1 comes on the heels of Can’t You Hear Me, featuring several of the same acts, as well as Witch and Amanaz full-lengths on Now-Again. Expect plenty of fuzz guitar and funky drummers anchored by charming and charismatic vocals on these lo-fi recordings. This double vinyl set includes a code for free digital download and 15-page booklet containing photos of the artists and exhaustive liner notes compiled by Egon and Zambian music historian Leonard Koloko.
