Battles is an experimental music group founded in 2002, and currently consisting of the lineup of guitar / keyboard player Ian Williams and drummer John Stanier. Juice B Crypts is their fourth record for Warp Records, and is described by Williams as being about “chord progressions, resolutions, returning home. Take that and throw it into a blender of modern electronic tools like glitching devices, or use melodic lines and take them and regurgitate them and pulverize the traditional stuff but at the same time try and retain harmonic relationships while completely smashing them up.” The record is stuffed with complex electronic sequences, heady repetition, and a constantly shifting sonic palette. The album features a variety of guest vocals from every eras of left-field music, including Sal Principato of Liquid Liquid, multi-instrumentalist Xenia Rubinos, Shabazz Palaces, and even Jon Anderson of Yes. “Ambulance” begins with monophonic blips and bloops that shift and pitch-bend into stiff-wristed snares and jittery guitar texture before the wheels fall off. “Fort Greene Park” is a warm blanket of analog synthesizers, “Titanium 2 Step” is brash breakbeats and skronky guitar flourish, sounding dense and detailed and rugged and blown out at the same time. This LP is packaged in a gatefold sleeve and is pressed on double transparent colored vinyl. Recommended.
